A Brief History of Photography and the Camera

The First Camera was important because it was the first step in one of the world's most beloved forms of art, and one of the largest pieces of visual media on the planet.

The First Permanent Images (Daguerreotype, Emulsion Plates, Dry Plates) were important because the permanent image has defined the genre to this day, and opened up opportunities for a new medium

Camera For Everyone was important because it opened up the genre for everyone, and allowed anyone who could afford the camera participate in the art form

The Horrors of War were important because it showed the versatility of the camera, it brought a new aspect to photography, information through photos.

The Wonder of Instant Images was important because it allowed people to take multiple shots without it having to be perfect the first time.If you see something in the shot you didn't like, you could retake it and see the new one.

Advanced Image Control was important because it made shooting easier, and more appealing

Introducing Smart Cameras was important because it alleviated some of the difficulties with setting up shoots. It helped popularize point and shoot.

The Digital Age was important because it made high quality images on any camera.

Though not everybody would agree, I want to argue that "The First Permanent Images" is the most significant step in the evolution of the camera.

I have several reasons for arguing this point of view:

My first reason is It defined the medium. Permanent images allowed people to see their work for more than a brief period of time.

A further reason is There was versatility between the types. Daguerreotypes preceded modern film, where as emulsion plates were for more specific images.

Furthermore it truly became an art form. Permanent images made the photograph an integral part of art in general

Therefore, although some people might argue that the first camera is the most important step, I have shown it's the creation of the first permanent images that have truly defined modern photography.
